Assessment of Ecosystem Services, Biodiversity, and Well-Being in Portugal

ASEBIO (2018-2022)

Description

Ecosystem services

Ecosystem services (ES) are the benefits provided by nature and these have a direct impact on human well-being. However, ES valuation studies in Portugal are rare and often done at local level.

Geographical Information
Systems

ASEBIO assesses and maps ES and their vulnerability in Portugal mainland, based on CORINE land cover (1990-2018). The project will quantify the impacts on ES and tradeoffs considering different policy scenarios affecting land cover change (LCC) for 2040.

Avoided costs

Selected ES, such as water cleaning, food from agriculture, and others, will be monetarily valued by estimating the costs associated to the deterioration of ES.

Well-being indicators

The project will propose a well-being indicator and assess the impact of LCC according to the different scenarios.

Purpose

Monitoring and valuing ES, and to better understand the impacts of Land Cover Changes on ES, biodiversity, and human well-being.

Main Objectives

Objective 1

Identify key ES with stakeholders, and define a joint biophysical assessment of ES and biodiversity in Portugal, at national and regional level, based on CORINE land cover

Objective 4

Determine the monetary costs caused by the decrease of ES according to scenarios

Objective 2

Assess the vulnerability of ES, and biodiversity to major threats identified by stakeholders

Objective 5

Determine well-being indicators according to scenarios

Objective 3

Define scenarios for 2040 based on land change models, and measure the impact on ES and biodiversity to identify existing tradeoffs

Research Approach

Identification and assessment of ES

ES vulnerability assessment

ES scenario modelling

Costs of decrease of ES according to scenarios

Impact of landcover changes on well-being

Impact

The project proposes an innovative methodology for monitoring and valuing Ecosystem Services (ES), and to better understand the impacts of Land Cover on ES, biodiversity, and human well-being in Portugal.

ASEBIO innovative approach is of great interest for the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF) mission by contributing to the achievement of target 2 of the European Union Strategy on Biodiversity 2020 – Maintain and restore ecosystems and their services.

ASEBIO will support ICNF call for action on mapping and assess the state of ecosystems and their services in national territory, assess the economic value of such services, and promote the integration of these values into accounting and reporting systems.

These should also contribute to relevant targets of National Biodiversity, National Strategy, and several sustainable targets of UN Agenda on Sustainable development 2030.
